xie̅ = xi + e1

to rest / to take a break / to stop / to halt / (dialect) to sleep / a moment / a short while

歇 = 曷 + 欠 : Marie Curie (xi) is gambling on a quiz wheel (曷) in front of the elevator (e1). As she turns the wheel and it turns out that she will have to pay a great debt, she says "give me a break" (歇), leaves an IOU note (欠) instead and lies down in the grass to relax a bit (歇).

why / how / when / what / where

曷 = 匃 + 日 : So many questions! That's why I'm gonna represent this with a quiz wheel. Each section of the wheel corresponds to one of the question words.

The beggar from ancient Egypt (匃) is the candidate in a quiz game just inside the elevator's kitchen (e2). His quiz master is Hamlet (h), and the quiz wheel (曷) is spun by the sun (日).

欠

qiàn = qi + an4

to owe / to lack / (literary) to be deficient in / (bound form) yawn / to raise slightly (a part of one's body)

欠 = ⺈ + 人 : The Queen of Hearts (qi) is pretty annoyed by Neanderthal Man (人), who is quarreling with the crane (⺈) in the anthill's bathroom (an4). Neanderthal Man (人) owes the crane money, and the crane is waving with his IOU note (mnemonic symbol for 欠).
